How CBD Oil Can Help Your Pet Deal With 4th of July Fireworks Anxiety

The 4th of July might be a happy time for you and your family, but what about your pet? If your dog or cat suffers from anxiety related to loud noises then CBD might be the answer.

For many the July 4th holiday is a time to really get out and enjoy summer. It’s a uniquely American holiday that usually culminates in impressive fireworks displays from sea to shining sea, but this can sometimes be a problem for pets with severe anxiety issues. Most dogs and cats deal with the noise ok, but keeping your buddy at home with all the doors and windows closed may not be enough to keep them calm and anxiety-free as fireworks explode around them, often at all hours of the night.

How CBD can help

Not all dogs are afraid of loud noises but for those that are it can be a very scary experience. Many dogs are sensitive to loud noises from things like thunder, loud music, loud traffic noises and fireworks and it can have a detrimental effect on not only their mental health, but sometimes the pet owner’s property, doors and furniture as well.

As we previously explained in another blog post, CBD oil is a safe, all-natural solution to a number of canine health concerns, including relieving and reducing anxiety.

CBD works by interacting with your pet’s endocannabinoid system to tell the body something isn’t quite right. The chemical imbalance that creates anxiety needs to be corrected, which is one of the major benefits of CBD. Many dog owners have found that after administering CBD oil, their anxious dogs become noticeably calmer.

How and when to administer CBD to your pet

To use CBD oil to your dog’s best advantage this Fourth of July, administer the CBD 15-30 minutes before the festivities are expected to start if possible.

The amount of CBD you give your pet will depend largely on the weight of the dog, but a good rule of thumb is to start with between 1.5mg and 2mg for every 15 pounds of body weight. It’s best to start on the low end and then slowly increase the dose every 45 minutes to an hour until the desired results are achieved. Some dogs will respond to CBD rather quickly, but often it can take a bit of steady titration to find the correct dose. The good news is, once you determine the optimal dose for your dog it will usually stay about the same, which will make dosing needs much more predictable in the future.

What if I give my dog too much CBD?

The good news is that current research indicates it is impossible to overdose on CBD. So if you accidentally give your dog more CBD than you intended to, there is a very low chance of it having adverse effects. While an extremely high dose of CBD could actually increase their anxiety, chances are the worst side effects you would see would be increased lethargy, napping and maybe the munchies (CBD does come from the cannabis plant after all!).
