Emerging Evidence Shows Promise for CBD as a COVID-19 Treatment

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia have discovered evidence of CBD's effectiveness in preventing the deadly "cytokine storm" response that has been seen in severe cases of COVID-19.

Breakthrough Research into COVID-19 using CBD to reduce inflammation

Cytokines cause inflammation in the body as a result of of infection. When that inflammation goes unchecked it can lead to a cytokine storm, which is inflammation that builds up in the lungs and other organs. Researchers believe that CBD can help to regulate cytokine and inhibit immune cell proliferation, thus reducing the severity of the body's inflammatory response.

The main goal of researchers in this study was to find a way to stop Accute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), the often-fatal end result of extreme cytokine storm immune responses.

ARDS is a major killer in severe cases of some respiratory viral infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and we have an urgent need for better intervention and treatment strategies.

Reserachers conducted the experiment by artificially triggering an ARDS response, then administered CBD to see how the patients' lungs would respond.

As they had theorized, CBD dramatically reduced cytokine levels in the blood and helped to stabalize oxygen levels. Patients also found that their temperatures stabalized and their lungs recovered more quickly and fully.
